As each individual progresses through the programme we liaise closely with the employment team to ensure that they can utilize
their skills to access paid employment in their local communities.
Essential Skills Programme
This is a cross community Programme which helps people with learning disabilities tackle the barriers they face when
looking for paid employment through the provision of innovative accredited training courses which include:
Money Management
Independent Travel
Pre Employment Skills
(Developed by
The Orchardville Society)
Reading, writing and working with numbers are essential
skills for all areas of our lives from buying groceries to filling in forms.
These courses specifically address the barriers of how to get a
job and keep it, understanding money and getting paid and how to travel independently. All courses are tailored to the needs of the
individual.
Money Management
Provides individuals with the experience and skills they
require to set up and manage their bank account. These skills are particularly important when they are moving into paid employment.
The course has been designed and developed by NOW to meet
an identified need and is the first of it's kind in Northern
Ireland.
Independent Travel Training
Enables individuals to practice and gain the skills they
require for traveling independently in a safe environment.
Incorporated into the programme is the use of ICT with a
specialised CD Rom interactive training package, which participants
can use independently, or with support.
Pre Employment Skills
Introduces the world of work and helps people understand
their rights in employment and what is expected of them as employees.
We examine areas such as Health and Safety, Job Search and Appropriate Work Behaviour.
All courses delivered within this innovative Programme are
accredited with NI Open College Network (OCN) and are tailored to meet
each individuals learning and support needs.
Employment Services
Having a job is a key feature of Social Inclusion. It provides
not only financial reward (and spending power) but many other positive
gains including social networks, status, increased confidence and self-esteem and a structured and meaningful lifestyle. The labour
market
has, however, traditionally marginalised and excluded people
with disabilities. In contrast, NOW through our Employment Programme aims to support people with learning disabilities into real job opportunities in businesses throughout North & West Belfast.
This is a cross community Programme which has been designed
to provide individuals with learning disabilities with the training
and support they require to get the job they want and keep it. We
provide a package of services that enables individuals to access the
following
types of employment:
Work Sampling
Paid Work Trials
Voluntary Work
Permitted Work
Employment Support
Access to Work
Open Employment
Transition Programme
Our Transition Service is part of our Employment Programme and had been designed to provide young school leavers with learning disabilities with the information and support they require to
make the move from school into further education, training and employment.
NOW uses an individualised, innovative approach that allows students to explore options, gain independence through real life experiences and sample a variety of work placements. We believe that successful transition planning is an important step towards
a fulfilled adult life.
